Deletions in the AZFa, AZFb and AZFc regions are tested in severe oligospermia or azoospermia. AZFc deletions often still allow sperm retrieval, while complete AZFa or AZFb deletions usually do not — which is exactly why the test is done before surgery. Any son conceived will inherit the deletion, so genetic counselling is offered.
