Amenorrhoea is the absence of menstrual periods. It is expected before puberty, during pregnancy and breastfeeding, and after menopause. Outside these situations, amenorrhoea can result from conditions such as PCOS, hypothalamic amenorrhoea, thyroid disorders, raised prolactin, premature ovarian insufficiency, or structural causes such as intrauterine adhesions. Amenorrhoea is generally described as primary (periods never started by an expected age) or secondary (periods stop after previously being present). Evaluation typically includes a history, examination, hormone tests, and sometimes ultrasound, to identify a treatable cause.
Also known as: absent periods, no periods
