Metformin is a medicine primarily used to improve the body's response to insulin, and is sometimes prescribed for women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) who have features of insulin resistance, alongside fertility treatment such as ovulation induction. It is not a fertility medicine itself and does not directly stimulate ovulation, but may support metabolic health and, in some cases, improve response to ovulation-inducing medicines. Whether metformin is appropriate depends on individual metabolic and reproductive factors, and this decision is made by the treating clinician, often in conjunction with a physician managing PCOS or metabolic health. It should be started, continued or stopped only on medical advice, and is not a substitute for other PCOS management such as lifestyle measures reviewed with the treating team. Metformin is a prescription medicine in India, regulated by the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO).
Also known as: metformin for PCOS, insulin sensitiser
