Multiple-follicle development refers to the growth of more mature ovarian follicles than intended during ovulation induction or stimulated IUI, which raises the chance of releasing more than one egg and therefore the risk of a multiple pregnancy (twins or more) if fertilisation occurs. Multiple pregnancies carry higher risks for both mother and babies. Clinics monitor follicle growth with ultrasound during stimulated cycles specifically to catch this early. If too many follicles are developing, the treating team may advise withholding the trigger injection, cancelling the insemination for that cycle, or converting the plan to IVF with a freeze-all approach, depending on the clinical picture.
