Female fertility
The fallopian tubes are where egg and sperm normally meet. Blockage or scarring — from pelvic infection, genital tuberculosis, endometriosis, previous surgery or an earlier ectopic pregnancy — prevents this. Blockage is usually identified on an HSG or HyCoSy, or at laparoscopy. IVF bypasses the tubes entirely, which is why it is the usual treatment for tubal disease.
