Down-regulation uses a GnRH agonist over one to three weeks to quieten the pituitary so that follicle growth can be started from a controlled baseline and an early LH surge is prevented. A scan and sometimes a blood test confirm suppression before stimulation begins. Hot flushes, headaches and mood changes are common while down-regulated.
