Egg retrieval

Egg retrieval, also called egg collection or oocyte retrieval, is done under sedation or light anaesthetic. A needle guided by transvaginal ultrasound passes into each follicle and the fluid is drawn off for the embryologist to search for eggs. It usually takes 15 to 30 minutes, and cramping and light bleeding afterwards are normal. Not every follicle contains an egg.
