Fertility basics
Infertility is usually defined as not achieving pregnancy after 12 months of regular unprotected sex. From about age 35 many South African specialists suggest assessment after six months, and earlier still if periods are absent or very irregular, there is known tubal damage, endometriosis, previous pelvic infection, cancer treatment or a known sperm problem. Infertility is a medical condition rather than a personal failing, and in roughly a third of couples a male factor contributes.
