Intrauterine adhesions are bands of scar tissue inside the uterine cavity, usually following surgery such as a dilatation and curettage, infection, or retained tissue after pregnancy loss. They can make periods lighter or absent and reduce the space available for implantation. Diagnosis is by hysteroscopy, saline infusion sonography or a specialised scan, and treatment is hysteroscopic division of the scar tissue.
