After ovulation the emptied follicle becomes the corpus luteum and produces progesterone, which keeps the womb lining stable and receptive. This phase is usually about 12 to 14 days. A consistently short luteal phase, or low progesterone, is sometimes investigated as part of a fertility work-up.
