Ovulation

Ovulation is the release of a mature egg from the dominant follicle, triggered by a surge of luteinising hormone. The egg can be fertilised for roughly 12 to 24 hours, but because sperm survive for several days, the fertile window opens before ovulation. Signs include a change to clear, stretchy cervical mucus, a positive ovulation predictor kit and a small rise in basal body temperature afterwards.
