Ovulatory cycle

An ovulatory cycle is one where a follicle matures and releases an egg, followed by a luteal phase in which progesterone rises. Not every cycle with bleeding is ovulatory; cycles without ovulation can still produce bleeding that looks like a period. A mid-luteal progesterone blood test is the usual way to confirm that ovulation has occurred.
