POI is when the ovaries stop working normally before the age of 40, causing irregular or absent periods, low oestrogen and often menopausal symptoms. It is diagnosed with repeated hormone tests. Occasional ovulation can still happen, so pregnancy is not impossible, but many people in this situation consider donor eggs. Long-term bone and heart health also need attention, usually with hormone replacement.
