Nourish While Trying to Conceive

Everyday meal ideas for anyone hoping to conceive, written for South Africa.

Ingredients are shown in metric measures by default, and you can switch between metric and US cups and ounces on any recipe page. Each recipe includes allergen information, food-safety notes, storage guidance and approximate nutrition per portion.

Supplements and drinks

  • A daily folic acid supplement is widely recommended before conception and through early pregnancy to help prevent neural tube defects. Folate-rich foods do not replace the supplement. Ask your doctor which dose applies to you and follow your national health authority's guidance.
  • Vitamin D and iron requirements vary with diet, sunlight exposure and health conditions. Ask your doctor whether you need a supplement and follow your national health authority's guidance.
  • There is no known safe level of alcohol in pregnancy, and most guidance suggests keeping caffeine to around 200 mg a day. Recipes here contain no alcohol.

For both partners

These recipes are written for anyone hoping to conceive, including partners. General healthy-eating advice applies to both partners; talk to a doctor about any specific concerns.

If you are having fertility treatment, follow the food, drink and supplement advice given by your clinic — it takes priority over general guidance.
