Untreated coeliac disease can cause nutrient deficiencies, irregular cycles and an increased risk of miscarriage. It is diagnosed with blood tests while still eating gluten, confirmed by biopsy, and managed with a strict gluten-free diet. Screening may be considered where there is unexplained infertility, anaemia or recurrent loss.
