Paternal age

The age of the sperm-providing partner, which also affects outcomes.

Fertility basics

Paternal age has a real but more gradual effect than maternal age. From around the mid-forties, average semen parameters decline slightly, sperm DNA fragmentation tends to rise, and there is a small increase in the risk of certain new genetic changes and of miscarriage. These are modest population-level shifts, and most older men father healthy children.
