Fertility basics
In the body fertilisation happens in the fallopian tube. In IVF it happens in the laboratory, either by mixing eggs with prepared sperm or by injecting a single sperm into each mature egg (ICSI). Fertilisation is confirmed the next morning by seeing two pronuclei. Not every mature egg fertilises, and that is expected.
