Natural-cycle IUI is intrauterine insemination performed without the use of ovulation-inducing or stimulating medicines. The clinic monitors the woman's own menstrual cycle with ultrasound scans, sometimes alongside urine or blood hormone testing, to identify when ovulation is about to occur or has just occurred, and performs the insemination at the appropriate time. This approach avoids medicine-related side effects and the risk of a multiple pregnancy from over-stimulation, and may be offered to women who ovulate regularly. It generally has a lower per-cycle success rate than stimulated IUI, and cycles can occasionally be cancelled if ovulation timing cannot be reliably tracked.
Also known as: unstimulated IUI
