In saline infusion sonography, a small amount of sterile saline is placed in the uterine cavity through a fine catheter while an ultrasound is performed. The fluid separates the walls so that polyps, submucosal fibroids, adhesions or a septum can be seen clearly. It is quick, does not need anaesthetic and is often used before IVF or after failed transfers.
