A karyotype photographs all 46 chromosomes to detect missing, extra or rearranged material. It is offered after recurrent miscarriage, in severe male factor infertility, and where a family history suggests a chromosomal condition. Finding a balanced translocation in a parent explains many repeated losses and opens the option of PGT-SR.
