Hormones
FSH is produced by the pituitary gland and drives follicle growth in the ovaries and sperm production in the testes. A blood test early in the cycle (usually day 2 to 5) gives an indication of ovarian reserve: a raised level suggests the ovaries need more stimulation to respond. FSH is also the main active ingredient in many injectable IVF stimulation medicines.
