Method

  1. Step 1. Brown the minced beef in a large pan over a medium-high heat, breaking it up as it cooks.
  2. Step 2. Add the onion and carrot and cook for 5 minutes until softened.
  3. Step 3. Stir in the lentils, stock, tomato purée and Worcestershire sauce.
  4. Step 4. Simmer for 25–30 minutes until the lentils are soft and the mince is cooked until piping hot throughout with no pink meat remaining.
  5. Step 5. Meanwhile, boil the potatoes for 15–20 minutes until tender, then mash with milk and butter.
  6. Step 6. Preheat the oven to 200°C (180°C fan).
  7. Step 7. Spoon the meat mixture into an ovenproof dish and top with the mash.
  8. Step 8. Bake for 20–25 minutes until golden and piping hot throughout before serving.
