Method

  1. Step 1. Preheat the oven to 190°C (170°C fan).
  2. Step 2. Wash, peel and slice the apples and pears and place in an ovenproof dish.
  3. Step 3. Rub the butter into the flour and oats until it resembles breadcrumbs, then stir in the brown sugar.
  4. Step 4. Sprinkle the crumble topping evenly over the fruit.
  5. Step 5. Bake for 30–35 minutes until golden and the fruit is soft.
  6. Step 6. Meanwhile, make the custard by whisking custard powder and caster sugar with a little cold milk to a paste, then heating the rest of the milk and stirring in the paste; cook gently until thickened and piping hot.
  7. Step 7. Serve the crumble hot with the custard.
